Senior Housing Residents Educate Their Neighbors at "Flu Fair"

In mid-December of 2005, residents of one senior housing building in Hartford attended an in house "flu fair" to learn about the dangers of influenza, and the benefits of the flu shot. The fair, a component of ICR's VIP: Vaccinate for Influenza Prevention project, was an enjoyable, interactive way to build community knowledge and promote health maintenance. The event featured speakers from the CT Department of Public Health and VNA Health Care, Inc.; a brief movie with pro-vaccination persuasive messages created by residents; a "flu facts" question-answer game; a flu puzzle; a "design your own flu vaccination poster" competition; and door prizes. The VIP Committee, made up of nine volunteers who live in the building, organized the event.

Recognizing that many residents have fears and misconceptions about getting vaccinated, committee members discussed their own experiences with the flu shot to address their neighbors' concerns. The flu shot, VIP Committee member Rosalind Sailor told the crowd, is "not something you have to be afraid of. It's worth taking that chance." The day after the flu fair, VNA Health Care, Inc. sponsored a flu vaccination clinic for building residents, many of whom received their flu shots for the first time. The goal is to increase vaccination rates to 80 - 90%, the standard set by the Surgeon General for adults over 65. The resident-run flu fair, a national model, is part of a larger intervention study, supported by a Congressional appropriation to the University of Connecticut and ICR. The study evaluates a resident peer-education approach to improving flu vaccination acceptance among older minority adults, who are at highest risk for non-vaccination, flu infection and resulting poor health consequences.
