ICR Founding Director to Lecture on Action Research for Health Social Change
Jean J. Schensul, Ph.D., Senior Scientist at The Institute for Community Research (ICR), discussed “Research Partnerships for Health Social Action” at The University of Cincinnati Action Research Center’s lecture series on January 24, 2007. The talk on health social action was targeted toward public health experts who are interested in using research to reduce health disparities and to change structural and social factors that create health and mental health problems. In her lecture, Dr. Schensul presented principles and approaches to action research, and outlined the meaning of the terms "health" (individual, family and community wellbeing), "partnership", "democratic" (participatory) research processes, and "social action" (individual and group transformation for organized action toward health improvement). Examples of ICR projects including V.I.P.: Vaccinate for Influenza Prevention, the Youth Action Research Institute, the Risk Avoidance Partnership, Xperience, and RISHTA: Male Sexual Concerns and Prevention of HIV/STDs in India rounded out the presentation, which ended in dialogue with students and faculty. While there, she met with staff of the Harmony Center, a new PAR center in Cincinnati, and faculty of UC and other universities partnering with the Center. Dr. Schensul is ICR’s Founding Director. For the 2006-7 academic year, she taught and wrote as a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Education and Information Services at The University of California at Los Angeles.
