Chilean Music, Poetry Reading & Discussion

December 2, 2006, 7 pm - 9 pm, at La Paloma Sabanera Coffeehouse and Bookstore, 405 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT.

About 15-20 children celebrated Chilean culture at La Peña Chilena, an afternoon workshop at The Institute for Community Research featuring educator Christi Moraga, who demonstrated how to make arpilleras (storycloths), and dancer Marta Leal, who led visitors in the traditional dance la cueca. The event also featured Chilean food and lively music. In the evening, community members gathered at La Paloma Coffeehouse and Bookstore to hear the poetry of Chilean writer and human rights activist Marjorie Agosín, whose family fled Chile in 1971. She was joined by choreographer Judy Dworin, describing her collaboration with arpilleristas in Chile and members of the Chilean community in Connecticut to develop the innovative 2001 dance performance ¿Dónde Están?. Local musicians Juan Brito and Roberto Clarijo also played songs from this important era in Chile’s history.
