Empowered Voices: A Participatory Action Research Curriculum for Girls

An award-winning cooperative learning approach that focuses on girls' development, improving and maintaining high self-esteem, strengthening the relationships among girls and between girls and women, and building critical thinking and problem solving skills. Includes Understanding Self and Relationships, Building Cultural and Gender Identity, Education and Career Options, Adolescent Development, HIV/AIDS Awareness, Building ATOD Knowledge, Community Action Research Project, Appendices, and Bibliography. Culturally and developmentally appropriate for pre to early-adolescent Puerto Rican/ Latina, African American, and Caribbean American girls.

Urban Women Against Substance Abuse (UWASA), a past project of the Institute for Community Research (1996-2001) that was the basis for this curriculum, has been recognized by the Western Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT), the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) as a "Promising Program" for substance abuse prevention.

 

Participatory Action Research Curriculum for Empowering Youth
Based on an action research model that promotes learning and change by actively engaging youth in discovering, collecting information about, and taking action on issues that directly affect them and their communities. Format is adaptable for both school and community settings. Includes Building Relationships, Introducing Participatory Action Research (PAR), Developing a PAR Strategy, Collecting and Analyzing Data, Making Sense of the Data, Using Data for Change, Supplementary Materials, and Bibliography. Appropriate for ages 8 to 22.
