A promising new HIV prevention
therapy for women is the topic of the this month's Hartford
HIV Forum. The forum is being held on Tuesday, April 11
at 12:00 noon at the Living Center, 1841 Broad Street.
The event is free and includes lunch. Preregistration
is required.
Ann Forbes, MSS, field organizer at the Center for Health
and Gender Equity, is presenting state-of-the art research
on microbicide therapy along with recommendations for
accelerating research efforts. The topical microbicides,
which women apply vaginally, prevent the transmission
of infectious agents such as HIV.
"Microbicides offer one of our best hopes for really
slowing down the spread of HIV throughout the world,"
says Laurie Novick Sylla, Executive Director of the HIV
Action Initiative. "We are more likely to find an
effective microbicide in the next several years than a
vaccine."
This is the third lecture in the Spring 2000 series of
forums organized by the HIV Action Initiative and the
Institute for Community Research. The Hartford HIV Forum
meets from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., on a selected Tuesday
of each month. The goal of the forums is to give the local
community the most up-to-date information on current topics
in AIDS prevention, treatment, research and care. For
more information about the series, contact Laurie Sylla
at the HIV Action Initiative at 860-280-2493 or Peg Weeks
at the Institute for Community Research at 860-278-2044
