AIDS advocacy will be the topic of April's Hartford HIV Forum.
Alycia Santilli, Community Organizer of the Connecticut AIDS
Residence Coalition, will speak on Tuesday, April 12 at noon
at the Living Center, 1841 Broad Street. The event is free;
lunch will be provided and advance registration is required.
Santilli will discuss AIDS advocacy, focusing on issues that
include funding and legislation for housing, HIV prevention
and education, treatment, and syringe exchange programs for
injection drug users. Additionally, she will present an overview
of the legislative structure and process.
By attending the Hartford event, interested members of the
public, and health care and social service providers also
will learn how to advocate for resources and services at the
state level.
"People living with HIV, service providers, as well as the
general public will come away with some basic advocacy skills
to take back to their community," said Santilli. "It's every
citizen's responsibility to take an active role in the democratic
process. If we each took a few minutes every week to participate,
we would live in a different society," she added.
This is the third lecture in the Spring 2005 series of forums
organized by The Institute for Community Research and the
Connecticut AIDS Education and Training Center. The Hartford
HIV Forum meets from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., on the second
Tuesday of each month. The goal of the forums is to give the
local community the most up-to-date information on current
topics in AIDS prevention, treatment, research and care. To
register for the forum, call the Institute for Community Research
at 860-278-2044. For more information about the series, contact
