What We Do
ICR uses the following action strategies as the basis for developing our partnerships and projects:
Basic research
Intervention research
Participatory action research training and evaluation
Cultural conservation and development
A team-based approach to program development and management reflects our commitment to critical thinking, leadership development, capacity-building and democratic decision making. Funded by federal research agencies, private foundations and state government, we focus our research on creating a healthy community for all populations. Research topics include:
Health and mental health
Education
Arts
International issues.

"Although its vision is global, research on human and social issues is always local. It affects people with local needs. The best social science research is done in partnership with people who have a vested interest in using the results because they need the best and most up-to-date information available to make decisions about their lives. ICR is dedicated to finding, creating, and using the most effective tools for doing collaborative community-based research, and sharing the results with others."

Jean J. Schensul, Ph.D.
Founding Director, ICR

Who We Work With
Our approach to collaborative action research brings ICR projects and programs directly into the community, where residents live, work and socialize. A dialogue process drives our partnerships with community organizations and residents, where together we determine priority concerns. We also interact with an array of local, regional and national organizations whose interests and work intersect with ICR's mission. Our partners include: service providers, research institutes, community-based organizations and other non-governmental organizations, informal community groups and associations, hospitals and schools, local and state agencies, public housing, museums and cultural centers, universities, ethnic and national groups, funders and the media.
